Sabine Wallops Winona 102-24

Cardinals roll up a huge win that should move the needle on the state rankings.

LIBERTY CITY, TX., Jan. 22, 2009 -- Leaving no doubt as to who owns the first place spot in 18-2A basketball, and perhaps sending a signal to TABC pollsters, the Sabine Cardinals tonight ran up a 78 point surplus in their win over a struggling Winona Wildcat squad.

Holding Winona to single digit team scoring in all four quarters, all five Sabine starters went wild, each netting double digit totals in the lop-sided contest. Colton Kirk led the Cardinals with 25 points, trailed closely by Jacob Kenna with 22.

Even with all the offense, the real story of the game was Sabine's domination of the floor, and rebounding under the basket.

Kirk and Kenna combined for 21 steals, and Cardinals Lie'Quan Byrd and Tyler Woodrell teamed up for 22 rebounds. Woodrell also blocked 5 shots.

With the victory, 4th ranked Sabine extended their winning streak to 14 games, and improved their record to 26-3 on the year, and 7-0 in district.

New Diana Rolls By Harleton 46-29

Eagles extend a ten point halftime lead to a 17 point win, holding Harleton to just four points in the fourth quarter.

DIANA, TX., Jan. 23, 2009 -- New Diana, coming off a win over Winona Tuesday, opened the game with a 4-2 district record, and was aiming to hang on to a third place spot in 18-2A. Trailing Sabine and White Oak, a third place finish would give the Eagles a playoff berth.

Harleton never gave them much cause for concern, as the Eagles outscored the Wildcats in all four quarters. Defense is key in Coach David Schubert's scheme, and the Eagles held Harleton to single digit scores in three of the four quarters.

Running a motion offense, Schubert got solid production from seniors Eric Dixon, Shay Bradley and Bo Yarbrough. Dixon led the Eagles with 12 points, followed by Bradley with 11 and Yarborough with 9.

Tanner Beatty led the Wildcat scorers with 8.

New Diana unlocked the Wildcat's 2-3 zone early, and lead by 14 points late in the second, when a three pointer by Harleton's Jacob Holmes, with a minute left, cut the Eagle's halftime lead to 11 points.

In the second half, New Diana slowed the tempo of the game down, burning time and denying Harleton the chance to score. The Wildcats scored only four points in the last frame.

New Diana, with a 5-2 district record and a solid hold on third place, goes on the road to face Harmony Tuesday for the second time this year. New Diana won the first matchup in a comeback 47-44 win.

Harleton puts their 3-4 district record on the line Tuesday at home, hosting powerhouse Sabine, ranked 4th in the state with a perfect 7-0 district record. This is their second meeting of the year. Sabine won the first 76-26.

Harleton Ladycats Win A Squeaker Over New Diana

In a close defensive game that could have gone either way, Harleton's girls hold off the Lady Eagles to win 31-29.

DIANA, TX., Jan. 23, 2009 -- From a 16-16 halftime tie, the Ladycats swapped the lead with New Diana several times over the course of the last 16 minutes, ending with a win that was in question all the way to the buzzer.

New Diana held the lead 23-22 at the end of the third, but 7 Eagle turnovers in the 4th quarter helped Harleton turn the tide.

With 25 seconds left, and the score tied at 29, Harleton's Hillary Hunter stole the ball from New Diana, outraced the Lady Eagles to the basket, and dished in the game winning lay-up to put the Ladycats on top.

A last second half court 3 point shot by Rainey Matthews fell short at the buzzer, sealing the win for Harleton.

TPWD Migratory Bird Hunting Update - Jan. 21, 2009

Diving ducks are still abundant on local lakes, wood ducks take a powder and mallards remain scarce.

NEWS RELEASE, Jan. 21, 2009 -- As creeks and backwaters dry up, woodies are leaving the area.

Pines hunters are still taking gadwalls and divers, but mallards, scarce all year, remain so.

North Zone Duck:
Duck hunting has slowed as of late, probably due to dry conditions and light winds. Hunters searching for mallards have had a tough time finding the prized duck. Area lakes and reservoirs have been devoid of greenheads for most of the season. Wood ducks have disappeared as of late, probably due to timber sloughs and back waters drying to dust. Lots of diver ducks on Toledo Bend, Caddo Lake, Lake O’the Pines, Lake Fork and Sam Rayburn. Gadwalls and a few wood ducks have been taken on Lake Palestine. Timber ponds able to be rested during the week have yielded decent shoots for mallards on weekend. Duck hunting around the IH-10 corridor has been slow, except for a few rested ponds. An influx of green-winged teal helped fill the bag during the past week. The season closes at sunset Jan. 25. Prospects are fair.

South Zone Duck:
Dry conditions across the coast have hurt duck hunting success. Few prairie ponds are left from the lack of rain during the past five months; however, those who have water have had successful hunts. Best hunting has been around East Bernard, Wharton and Chesterville. Duck hunting along the bay has been tough around Port O’Connor. Hunters able to find large rafts of redheads and pintails have shot their birds, but movement has been minimal during the day. Good hunts have been posted near Collegeport and Palacios. An influx of green-winged teal has helped put birds in the bag. Rockport hunters have taken limits of redheads and a few bluebills. Port Mansfield has been fair for divers and pintails. Goose hunting has been fair at best with bluebird skies. Geese are beginning to separate into small groups and worked the edges of fields for remaining food sources. Most geese are feeding on green fields or pastures over-seeded with rye grass. Duck and goose season ends at sunset Jan. 25. The Light Goose Conservation Order begins Jan. 26. Prospects are fair.

Sabine Ranking Holds Steady at #4

The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches rank the Cardinals at #4, unchanged from last week.

The top five teams in the TABC poll of 2A boys team have seemed set in stone this year, with the current week's edition offering no surprises. Jarrell and Wall fall out of the top ten, Spearman edges up to the eighth spot, and Shallowater and Newton creep in.

Having worked their way through most of the 18-2A teams undefeated, and with no tournaments left to play, Sabine's best hope to climb any further will be a loss by one of the top three, or to post bigger numbers and larger point spreads.

The TABC Rankings for Jan. 19, 2009
1 Ponder (24-0)
2 New Waverley (18-3)
3 Whitewright (20-1)

Pittsburg Angler Wins Falcon Lake Tourney

3 Day, 92 lbs. catch nets local angler $25,000 and a new boat.

ZAPATA, TX Jan. 17, 2009 -- Pro Joe Don Setina of Pittsburg, Texas, caught a five-bass limit weighing 38 pounds, 14 ounces Saturday to win the Stren Series Texas Division tournament on Falcon Lake with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 92-02. For his victory, Setina earned $25,000 cash and a fully equipped 198VX Ranger boat.

Setina’s 38-14 was the second-heaviest day-three catch in the history of FLW Outdoors, regardless of circuit. It also ranks fourth all time as the heaviest single-day catch in company history.

“This was my first time to fish Falcon Lake,” said Setina, who has amassed more than $172,000 in career earnings with FLW Outdoors. “I have read about Falcon Lake since I was young and out of all the places that I have fished I always wanted to go to Falcon. I dreamed about one day fishing on Falcon Lake and it certainly lived up to its reputation.”

Setina said that Falcon Lake fits into his style of fishing which is focusing on deep structure. He stated that any lake that has a deep water bite and big fish is his kind of place.

Setina opened the tournament in ninth place Thursday with five bass weighing 27-15. He then caught five bass weighing 25-05 Friday to make the crucial top 10 cut in seventh place.

“On the first day of the tournament I didn’t feel any pressure, I just planned on going fishing,” Setina said. “Other anglers seemed to be overwhelmed with the bushes but it didn’t bother me. When I started to prepare for the tournament I looked at several aerial photos and I knew that it would be overwhelming if I focused on bushes because they all look like they had fish in them. I really focused on fishing the bottom contours of the lake and trying to find other things besides bushes to fish.

“I felt really good after the first day. I felt like I could catch over 30 pounds a day, even though I came up a little short,” he said. “On the second day of the tournament I didn’t get as many bites and I lost a few big ones that really hurt my weight. It wasn’t the location that was the problem it was pulling the big fish into the boat. I fished the same spot for all three days. There was no need to go anywhere else.”

Setina worked the intersection of a creek channel and a road bed on the extreme south end of the lake near the dam. More specifically, it was Salinas Creek located on the Mexican side of the lake near the dam. At the intersection, the fish were holding tight to the bottom between 17 and 26 feet. ”The fish were either on the top edge of the creek channel or down in the creek. This location was so full of fish that all I had to do was sit in one spot and cast at a radius.”

Setina went into the final day of competition not expecting to win. He said that on Saturday he didn’t have any pressure since he was so far out of the lead. He went back to his key location and used the same baits as he had all week- a 10-inch Berkley Power Worm and a ¾-ounce Santone flipping jig and watermelon Sweet Beaver trailer.

Rounding out the top five pros are Richard Cathey of San Antonio, Texas (15 bass, 92-02, $10,000); Charles Haralson of Laredo, Texas (15 bass, 89-12, $8,000); Jerry Green of Cullman, Ala. (15 bass, 86-11, $7,000); and Dan Schoonveld of Mansura, La. (13 bass, 81-09, $6,000).

Schoonveld, caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Pro Division Friday – a 11-pound, 5-ounce bass – that earned him the day’s big bass award of $450.

Dean Kreuzer of Mesa, Ariz., won the Co-angler Division and a 198VX Ranger boat and trailer, with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 78-00.

Kreuzer caught five bass weighing 34-03 Thursday while fishing with pro Jimmy Lancaster of Keller, Texas, to open the tournament in first place. On Friday he added five more bass weighing 25-14 to make the top 10 cut in first place while fishing with pro Justin Haynes of Tulsa, Okla. Finally, on Saturday, he sealed the win with a five-bass catch weighing 17-15 while fishing with pro Schoonveld.

Rounding out the top five co-anglers are Keith Honeycutt of Temple, Texas (15 bass, 77-12, $4,000 plus a $2,500 Ranger Cup bonus); Timothy Achee of Hemphill, Texas (14 bass, 68-04, $3,000); Kenneth Pellerin of Pasadena, Texas (12 bass, 59-07, $2,500); and Chris Pennington of San Diego, Calif. (12 bass, 59-06, $2,250).

Kenneth Wilson of Pineville, La., caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Co-angler Division Thursday – a 10-pound, 4-ounce bass – that earned him the day’s big bass award of $225.

The next Stren Series Texas Division event, hosted by the City of Jasper, will be held March 19-21 on Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Jasper, Texas. Boats will launch from The Umphrey Family Pavilion in Sam Rayburn and the final weigh-in will be held at the Wal-Mart located at 800 W. Gibson Street in Jasper.

After four qualifying events are complete in each Stren Series division – Central, Northern, Southeast, Texas and Western – the top 40 pros and 40 co-anglers based on the points standings from each division will advance to the Stren Series Championship on Pickwick Lake in Florence, Ala., Nov. 5-7 for a shot at $150,000 in the Pro Division and $60,000 in the Co-angler Division. The top 10 pros and 10 co-anglers from each division will also qualify for the 2010 Walmart FLW Tour® and Walmart FLW Series®, bass fishing’s top professional circuits. The highest-finishing pro and co-angler from each division at the Stren Series Championship will also qualify for the $2.5 million 2010 Forrest Wood Cup, where anglers will compete for the $1 million grand prize – the most lucrative award in bass fishing

In Stren Series competition, pros supply the boats, fish from the front deck against other pros and control boat movement. Co-anglers fish from the back deck and compete against other co-anglers. Every angler who receives weight credit in a tournament earns points that determine angler standings. Two hundred points are awarded to the winner, 199 points for second, 198 points for third, and so on. The full field competes on days one, two and three, with the top 10 pros and 10 co-anglers advancing to day four based on their three-day accumulated weight. Winners are determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from all four days.

Total awards are based on a full field of 200 boats in every tournament.
