Lake Fork Yields 13 Pound ShareLunker Bass

Fork Fish Means ShareLunker Season Is NOW!

Bruce Peel caught ShareLunker No. 459 from Lake Fork February 12. The fish was 25.75 inches long and 20.5 inches in girth.

ATHENS, TX -- Bruce Peel of Granbury landed the fifth ShareLunker of the season Thursday, a 13.13-pounder from Lake Fork.

You could almost hear the big bass season kick into high gear.

Lake Fork has produced 240 of the 459 entries in the ShareLunker program, a whopping 52 percent. It doesn’t always produce the first fish of the season, and in 2006 Lake Alan Henry actually produced more lunkers.

But when that first fish from Lake Fork does take up residence in the Lunker Bunker at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, it’s a sign that the busy season is here.

Peel caught his fish in 16 feet of water on the edge of White Oak Creek using a four-inch Big Bite Beaver in watermelon. "It was the second place we tried. We’d been on the water only a couple of hours," said Peel, who was fishing with his wife. "I was looking for grass that might hold some heat." Water temperature at the time was 51.7 degrees.

Peel didn’t find the grass before the big bass hit. When he finally wrestled it into the boat, he almost released it immediately. "Then I thought, maybe I ought to have this fish weighed," he said.

That decision wins Peel a fiberglass replica of his fish, ShareLunker clothing, and a trip to Athens for the ShareLunker awards banquet in June.

Lake Fork and other lakes in Texas will be winners, too, if TPWD biologists are successful in spawning this year’s crop of lunkers. Offspring are stocked into lakes that produced lunkers.

To enter a fish into the program, call program manager David Campbell at (903) 681-0550 or page him at (888) 784-0600 and leave a number, including area code. Campbell or another TPWD staffer will pick the fish up within 12 hours.

"The ShareLunker Program has done a lot for fishing in Texas," Peel said. "Come to Lake Fork to catch the fish of a lifetime."

You heard the man.

New Diana Holds Off A Winona Surge To Win 60-56

The Eagles beat back a fourth quarter Wildcat run to win at home

DIANA, TX, Feb. 13, 2009 -- Leading 50-44 at the opening of the fourth quarter, the New Diana Eagles had no reason to sweat the final score in this evening's game against Winona. The game had been close, but the Eagles had held a five to six point lead for the last two quarters. The next two and half minutes, though, would give them reason to perspire.

With 5:30 left to play, the Wildcats had run off six unanswered points and tied the game at 50 all. The score would remain close for the next five minutes, both teams fighting viciously for rebounds, and answering basket for basket.

With 24 seconds left, the Eagles again saw daylight. Ryne Powell converted on two clutch free throws, giving Diana a razor thin lead, 58-56. The teams swapped scoreless possessions until a Bo Yarbrough steal and lay-up with nine seconds left put the game out of Winona's reach and into the Eagles win column.

Union Grove Releases 2009 Baseball Schedule

Lions Head Coach Russell Jarvis likes what he sees on the practice field

UNION GROVE, TX, Feb. 12, 2009`-- Union Grove Head Baseball Coach Russell Jarvis sent in his 2009 Baseball schedule yesterday, and he's excited by the depth of talent he has returning to the squad this year.

"I'm looking froward to the season. We have a lot of returning players back, lead by seniors Clint Kalinec C, Josh Carnes P/CF, Justin Kirchfeld P/OF, Brandon Nations 2nd/SS and Chance Greathouse 2nd/SS." Jarvis said. "As for a team outlook, this could be one of the better teams Union Grove has fielded in a while."

Jarvis knows his competition will be tough this year, but feels like his pitching talent and the team's experience could put the Lions within striking distance.

"We are in a very tough district but I feel we can be in the mix with the group of kids we have out. We will have 4 kids who could take the mound, two left handed and two rightys. With 7 starters returning and some of the new kids, if we can get the mix right we could make some noise this year"

LeTourneau Opens Tennis Season Friday

Yellowjackets open with a tough series of matches including two NCAA Div 1 schools

LONGVIEW, TX, Feb. 10, 2009 -- Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13 and 14, the men’s and women’s tennis teams from LeTourneau University kick off their 2009 seasons. As has become a tradition under Coach Doug Carter, the teams will start the season off with tough competition.

This year, the season opening opponents are NCAA D1 schools Centenary College of Louisiana, Prairie View A&M University, and then NAIA school College of the Southwest, from New Mexico. The schedule of play for this weekend will be busy, with matches both at LeTourneau University’s Davis Tennis Center and at Kilgore High School.

Centenary College will open up play Friday against College of the Southwest, starting at 10a.m. at LeTourneau. The Jacket netters take the Davis Tennis Center courts at 3 p.m., facing off against College of the Southwest. The 3 p.m. match at Kilgore will be two D1 schools squaring off, Centenary College of Louisiana versus Prairie View A&M.

Saturday will bring two big tests for the LeTourneau teams. At 10a.m., Centenary will play at LeTourneau, against the Jackets, while Prairie View A&M tangles with College of the Southwest in Kilgore. The weekend of tennis winds down with what could be the best match of the lot, as LeTourneau lines up against Prairie View A&M at 3p.m..

The womens team, coming off two consecutive American Southwest Conference playoff appearances, had a very successful fall season. They went deeper in the ASC Individual Championships and ITA Regional Championships than ever before. The women’s team is talented which drives the high expectations, but its youth also brings some trepidation because the team lacks some depth.

Longview’s own highly ranked Brittany Trich (Longview HS) was a top recruit around the state and nation and chose to stay home to help continue building on the success with the Jacket women. She joins three-time All ASC player from Van, senior Jessica Tindall (Van HS).

Talented sophomore from Houston, Britney Cleveland (Booker T. Washington HS) earned her own 2nd team All ASC honors in her first year in Longview. Cleveland is a hard worker and will be playing a big roll for the lady netters. The other ladies on the squad are all very talented and bring a lot to the team. Gladewater’s Mary Lauren Bright (Gladwater HS), Martindale’s Caitlyn Hairell (San Marcos’), Houston’s Meredith Bowman (Concordia Lutheran), and Flower Mound’s Ali Goodwin (Marcus HS) round out the team.

Bright has been getting stronger and more consistent over the last year, after a hand injury somewhat derailed her freshman campaign. Bright is expected to be a force in doubles. Hairell will continue to be a tough competitor in the lineup, winning matches with fierce consistency.

“We’ll continue to build on the positives here," Coach Carter said. "If we take care of our business, we’ll be there (the playoffs) again this year. We are talented!”

The men’s team is deep and experienced, which leads to the high expectations that the team has this year. Like the women, the men had a successful fall with deep runs at the ASC and ITA Regional tourneys. The men are 27-21 over the last 2 years, including a playoff appearance.

This year’s squad is again led on the court by Paris’ junior lefty Mark Taylor (North Lamar HS). Taylor carries a two-plus year singles record of 45-18 (75-34 overall) for the Jackets.

Scholarship school transfer players will help strengthen an already strong lineup the rest of the way. Former Jackson State player, Ryan Thomas (Arlington, TX/Juan Sequin) will be a strong #2 in the Jacket lineup. The Hinds College (MS) transfers of Daniel Shidler and Mike Parker will bring some immediate pop to the middle of the lineup. Shidler was the #65 singles player in the country and was part of the #9 doubles team there at Hinds. Parker also was right on the cusp of the top 100 in the US and while pairing with Shidler for doubles, truly brings something incredible to the Jackets.

The projected starters are rounded out by junior team captain Wade Sinard (Tuluso-Midway HS) and junior Paul Haney (Tuluso-Midway HS), both of Corpus Christi; along with El Paso’s Uli de la Fuente (Coronado HS) and Longview’s Elick Arp (Longview HS), both sophomores.

Sinard has a singles record of 44-23 (83-49 overall) at LeTourneau, while Haney sports a 39-22 (74-49 overall) record after missing some time for injury. Arp has a combined 22-13 record, while de la Fuente has a 29-25 record here at LETU. Stephenville’s Josh Millet and Lindale’s Randy Namanny will also hold important
positions on the team.

“We’re working hard and will take these matches one at a time," said Coach Carter. "Hopefully the guys will get the recognition they deserve this year and “we can do some traveling this April”. He continued, “Everyone has to be committed and stay committed to reach the goal. We want to do something truly special here at LeTourneau.”

The public is invited and there are no admission charges to come to matches or athletic events at LeTourneau University. Davis Tennis Center is located on the beautiful campus of LeTourneau University, located at 2100 S. Mobberly in south Longview.

New Diana Adds Longview To Baseball Scrimmage Lineup

Coach B.J. Brown adds the 5A Lobos to the Eagles tune-up schedule

DIANA, TX, Feb. 10, 2009 -- Coach B.J. Brown today added another team to his Eagle squad's 2009 scrimmage schedule. Before they take the field against Linden-Kildare and De Kalb, the Eagles will face their first pre-season test at home Friday against the Longview Lobo squad Friday, Feb. 13th at 4:00 p.m.

Longview last year, under coach Joey Kalmus, went (11-12), taking second in District 12-5A, behind Mesquite. The Lobos fell in the bi-district round, though, to a tough Plano West Wolves team that went on to win the state crown, and was ranked #1 nationally.

Longview graduated seven seniors off last years squad, and should be returning eight seasoned ball players this year.

Sabine Wins A Nail Biter Over White Oak, 59 - 55

Cardinals knock the Roughnecks out of first place contention and lock up the 18-2A championship

WHITE OAK, TX, Feb. 10, 2009 -- Almost 1200 fans packed the White Oak High School gymnasium tonight to see the two premier 18-2A teams battle it out for 1st place in the district. If they came expecting a close, hard fought game, they weren't disappointed.

Third ranked Sabine jumped out to an early lead, and by the end of the first quarter, led the Roughnecks by seven. But what started as another cakewalk for Sabine quickly turned into a roundball brawl, as White Oak battled back in the second period. Playing a close man-to-man defense, the Roughnecks managed to shut down Noah Jackson, the Cardinals leading scorer, and take a half-time tie into the locker room.

But the Cardinals have more than one way to score, and junior point guard Colton Kirk repeatedly found ways to penetrate the Roughneck defense. He ended the night leading all scorers with 25 points, and locked up the Sabine win by scoring the final three points of the game on a lay-up and a clutch free throw with under a minute to play.

Sabine fans rushed the floor at the final buzzer, congratulating their team, and relishing the win. It was the first time in over ten years that a Cardinal team had taken a victory from the Roughnecks on the road.

White Oak's Trevor Wait led Roughneck scoring with 18 points, followed by Jackson McCurdy with 11.

This Week's High School Basketball Games

Hughes Springs ladies sit solidly atop 17-2A, while the White Oak boys scrap with Sabine for a share of #1 in 18-2A

Feb. 10, 2009 -- The Hughes Springs girls (11-0) have the top seed in 17-2A sewn up, leaving Chapel Hill (MP), Queen City and Daingerfield to fight over the 2nd and 3rd spots. In 18-2A, Sabine's Lady Cardinals owns first, and White Oak's Ladynecks are trailing Harmony for 2nd. A loss by White Oak to #1 Sabine Tuesday would put Harmony in solid command of second.

The spotlight boys game will be in 18-2A Tuesday, with Sabine at White Oak. A Sabine win would guarantee a 1st place finish for the Cardinals, currently ranked #3 statewide. New Diana looks to get back on track on track after the two losses last week to Sabine and White Oak in Tuesday's game against Union Grove.

In 17-2A, Jefferson has a narrow lead on the top spot, but could lose that hold in Friday's game against Daingerfield.
