Sabine Defeats White Oak 52-43

In the Cardinal's first district win over the Roughnecks since 2003, Colton Kirk's 21 points lifts Sabine to 1st place in district 18-2A.

The house was packed at Liberty City Friday night, as the Sabine Cardinals and the White Oak Roughnecks renewed an old district rivalry. Both teams came into the game with 4-0 records, and a share of the lead in district 18-2A. Sabine had the edge, having beat the Roughnecks last month at the Last Man Standing tournament, and they didn't disappoint the home crowd.

Matching the point total of White Oak's two top scorers, Sabine's junior point guard Colton Kirk found a seam in White Oak's man-to-man defense that he would exploit all night, bucketing several easy lay-ups, and leading the Cardinals to their fifth district 18-2A victory. The Cardinals, ranked 4th among state 2A teams, claim first place in the district with a perfect 5-0 record.

Scoring in the first half was fairly even, with Sabine taking a slim 30-27 lead into the half. Resuming play in the second half, the Roughnecks were held to just five points, while Sabine added 12. Those twelve points would prove to be key.

In the last period, White Oak outscored Sabine 11-10, but the Cardinal lead was too much to overcome, and the Roughnecks were handed their first district loss.

Kirk led all scorers with 21 points, followed by teammate Tyler Woodrell with 12.

The Roughnecks were paced by Jackson McCurdy with 11 points, and Trevor Wait with 10.

Eagle's 8th Grade Girls Tame Wildcats

Holding Winona scoreless for three quarters, New Diana rolls to a 55-5 road win.

WINONA, TX, Jan. 15, 2009 -- Led by the scoring of Kimberly Hendricks and Courtney Rogers, the young Lady Eagles jumped out to a 19-5 first quarter lead, and never looked back.

Meeting the Winona squad at half court with a suffocating man on man defense, the Eagles time and again caused turnovers that led to fast break sprints and easy lay-ups.

Scoring 12 unanswered points in the second quarter, New Diana took a comfortable 31-5 lead into the half, and the break didn't help Winona any. The Eagles would score another 24 points in the second half, and put their biggest win of the season so far in the bag.

Sabine Overwhelms New Diana

Outside shooting lifts Cardinals over the Eagles, 81-35.

Tuesday, fourth ranked Sabine showed why they are climbing the state coaches poll, running over New Diana in a shooting spree.

In an exhibition of three point shooting, the Cardinals used their height advantage and a lack of pressure on the corners to outscore the Eagles in all four quarters.

When they weren't phoning the baskets in, the Cardinals used some remarkable inside passing to pick up the high percentage two pointers, and good pressure the length of the court to frustrate the Eagles, who usually play a good ball control offense.

The Eagles only trailed by ten to open the second quarter, but Sabine noticed they were getting free looks at the corners and the top of the key, and opened up the long ball shooting. Thanks to the hot hands of Colton Kirk and Noah Jackson, the tactic worked, and the cardinals took a 39-19 lead into the half.

Adjustments by New Diana in the second half to pressure the corners were answered by Sabine taking the ball inside, and their two point game proved just as hard to stop. At the end of the third quarter, the Cardinals owned an 60-23 lead.

Diana would add 12 points in the last eight minutes, but the Cards didn't slack off, answering with 21 points of their own to end the game.

Sabine's Colton Kirk led all scorers with 25, followed closely by teammate Noah Jackson with 24, both scoring four 3 point buckets.

Eric Dixon led New Diana with 15 points.
