New Diana Tops Union Grove

Led by the outside shooting of Eric Dixon, the Eagles post a 57-42 win.

UNION GROVE, TX, Jan. 16, 2009 -- Union Grove has struggled this year in district play. After opening with a win against Winona, the Lions dropped games to Harleton and Harmony. Friday, the struggle continued with a loss at home to New Diana.

Both teams opened slow, with the Eagles holding an 11-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter. But Union Grove closed the gap in the second to one point, closing the half with the Eagles leading 17-16.

Eric Dixon, the Eagle's senior shooting guard, caught the hot hand from outside in the third quarter, and the Eagles outscored Union Grove 17-5 in the period. The Lions turned up the offense in the final eight minutes, scoring 21, but they were outpaced by the Eagles with 23, and the game ended with an Eagles victory, 57-42.

New Diana, now 3-2 in district play, travels to Winona Tuesday.

Union Grove, now 1-3 in district, next faces Sabine, ranked 4th in the state, at home Tuesday.
