New Diana Falls Hard To Sabine

Giving Coach Tim Davis his 300th career win, Sabine swarmed all over the Eagles in a 73-26 win

GLADEWATER, TX, Feb. 6, 2009 -- The Eagles never knew what hit them tonight. Falling victim to a lightning fast Sabine defensive effort that stymied Eagle scoring and allowed the Cardinals to score 20 unanswered points and run up a 32-4 first quarter lead.

Sabine's Noah Jackson had a big hand in that deficit, hitting three shots from outside the arc in the first eight minutes of play.

Sabine held Diana to just two points in the second quarter, and took a 46-6 lead into the half.

Second half play was more favorable to the Eagles, and they paced the Cardinals, scoring 20 points to Sabine's 27.

Jackson led all scorers with 31 points, followed by teammates Colton Kirk with 16 points and Tyler Woodrell with 14.

Eric Dixon led the Eagle scoring with seven.

Lady 'Necks Clinch Playoff Berth

White Oak girls win big over Lady Eagles, 64-24

WHITE OAK, TX, Feb 3, 2009 -- The White Oak Lady 'Necks clinched a playoff spot tonight with the same pressure defense and dominant inside play that propelled them to win over New Diana the first time the two teams met.

The Eagles had trouble keeping a handle on the ball, and the 'Necks took advantage of the problem, blocking shots, stealing passes and transforming turnovers into fast-break scores again and again.

White Oak held new Diana to single digits in all quarters, and led 38-10 at the break. The scoring was even in the third, but any hope of a Diana comeback were crushed by a 19 point White oak scoring frenzy in the fourth.

White Oak Roughs Up New Diana

Roughnecks roll up a lopsided 72-38 win

WHITE OAK, TX, Feb. 3, 2009 -- The White Oak Roughnecks had no intentions of giving up a share of the 2nd spot in division 18-2A basketball tonight.

In a physical match that often resembled a football game, they pressured the New Diana squad relentlessly, forcing 26 turnovers and denying the Eagles their usual ball control offense.

For their part, Diana tried the zone and man-to man coverage, but White Oak had the three point range dialed in, and made the Eagles pay from outside the arc all night.

Eric Dixon lead the Eagles scoring with 12 points, followed by Ryne Powell with ten points. White Oak player stats were not available.

Record Bass Landed At Lake Conroe

Lake Conroe ShareLunker Makes Top 50 List

CONROE, TX, Feb. 2, 2009 -- Ricky Bearden of Conroe set a new water body record for largemouth bass January 30 when he pulled a 15.93-pound fish from two feet of water in Lake Conroe.

The big bass now holds the number 24 spot on the list of the top 50 largemouth bass ever caught in Texas.

Bearden was fishing with a plastic worm in 54-degree water when the big bass took the bait about 12:15 p.m. Friday. The fish was 27 inches long and 22 inches in girth.

"It’s one of the healthiest-looking fish entered into the ShareLunker program in some time," said ShareLunker program manager David Campbell.

The fish is the second ShareLunker to come from Lake Conroe during the current season. On December 13 Kyle Nitschke used a crankbait to land a 13.07-pound fish that is the junior angler state record largemouth bass.

"What’s driving this is the continued stocking of Lake Conroe with Florida largemouth bass," said Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) fisheries biologist Mark Webb, who manages the fishery. "In addition to the bass that TPWD stocks, the Lake Conroe Restocking Association purchases fish from Tyler Fish Farms and stocks them into the lake after they have been tested and certified to be Florida bass."

Since 2000 more than 1.7 million Florida largemouth bass fingerlings have been stocked into the lake.

Lake Conroe has also been the object of intensive vegetation management by TPWD and the San Jacinto River Authority, resulting in the removal of most of the hydrilla in the lake. Native vegetation is being established in its place. "Anglers are figuring out how to fish the lake in the absence of hydrilla," said TPWD fisheries technician Mike Gore. "They’re throwing more crankbaits and Carolina-rigged plastic worms. The fish are out there. You just have to know how to catch them."

Lake Conroe has now produced 14 ShareLunkers. Only Lake Fork, Lake Alan Henry and Sam Rayburn Reservoir have produced more 13-pound-plus fish.

Anyone legally catching a largemouth bass weighing 13 pounds or more from Texas waters, public or private, can enter the fish into the ShareLunker program. Fish will be picked up by TPWD personnel and taken to the Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens, where they are used in a selective breeding program that aims to increase the size and number of big bass in Texas. To have a fish picked up, call David Campbell at (903) 681-0550 or page him at (888) 784-0600 and leave a number, including area code. Anglers receive a fiberglass replica of their catch and ShareLunker clothing.

Eagles Roll Over Elysian Fields 48-15

New Diana has a solid third place district spot

NEW DIANA, Jan. 30, 2009 -- New Diana added to the troubles of a struggling Elysian Fields squad Friday, holding the Yellowjackets to single digits in all four quarters on the way to a 48-15 win.

Elysian Fields kept the game close through the first quarter, but New Diana pulled away in the second, and led at the half 21-8.

Fatigue began to show on the undermanned Elysian Fields squad in the second half. Only dressing out five players, the Yellowjackets could only manage 7 points in the second half. Under the Eagle basket, the quick passing of New Diana confounded the Elysian Fields defense, as the Eagles netted 27 points.

Eagle Eric Dixon led all scorers with 17 points, outscoring the entire Elysian Fields team. Elysian Fields player stats were not available.
