Quitman Tops Mt. Vernon In Tournament Championship

Holding Mt Vernon scoreless in the second quarter, the Bulldogs win their own tournament 59-45.

The Quitman Bulldogs went undefeated in their tournament, trouncing Paul Pewitt's Brahmas 54-33, and besting New Diana 57-51 on their way to a final round match-up with the Mount Vernon Tigers.

Mt. Vernon brought a spotless tournament record to the match, as well. With double digit wins over Winona and Hughes Springs, the 16-3A Tigers looked good to walk away with the crown.

But Quitman wasn't in the mood to roll over.

Opening a lead midway through the first quarter, the Bulldogs never looked back. Holding the Tigers scoreless in the second, they took a 29-13 lead into the break.

Mt Vernon mounted a small comeback in the first 4:00 minutes of the third quarter, holding Quitman to 2 points as they reeled off 9. But the comeback was short lived, and the Bulldogs matched the Tigers basket for basket after that to end the period holding a 38-29 lead.

Even holding a commanding lead, Quitman didn't let up. They outscored the Tigers 21-16 in the fourth quarter, saving the easiest work for last: The short walk to the trophy case.
