Sabine Closes With Perfect District Record
Cardinals down Winona 79-57, close in on season win record
WINONA, TX, Feb. 17, 2009 -- The 2008-09 Sabine Cardinals boys tonight came within one game of tying the all time school record for most wins in a season. The record stands at 34, set by the 1980-81 team that went 34-0 to win the state championship for Sabine. Sabine owns two state championships, won back to back in 1979-80 and 1980-81.
Sabine never trailed Winona tonight, and carried a 50-19 lead into the half. The Wildcats picked things up in the second half, outscoring Sabine 38-29 in the last two periods, but the damage done by the Cardinals in the first half was too much overcome.
Tonight's game closed regular season play, and the Cardinals end with a 33-3 record overall, and a perfect (14-0) in district play. They extended their winning streak to 22 games.
Sabine's Noah Jackson led all scorers with 21 points, and also 4 rebounds. Teammate Tyler Woodrell had a huge night on defense, pulling down 9 rebounds and blocking 7 shots.
